Each homeowner who’s pushed a lawnmower knows that grass needs periodic care. Even so, the ideal-kept yards may develop problems. Luckily, the solution can be as easy as an application of the correct lawn-care product. Or perhaps it is time to dethatch, unfold lime or just pour on extra water. In a good amount of cases, it’s a foolproof method which your garden center is more than happy to help with. And if the issue is really severe, you can frequently aerate and add extra seed, and be back to normal within a month or two.
But that is when the soil is workable. It is not always. In new housing developments, the topsoil is commonly scraped away to form a new landscape. Ideally, developers can end a job with 5 to six in. of topsoil to anchor the new lawn, but that’s the perfect case. In thehectic, final stages of construction, the quality of the dirt within the yard is often ignored–particularly if the new homeowner is less than willing to pay for extras. Worse still rushed landscaping can lead to poor drainage, and building scraps get plowed below, causing fungus issues for years to come. While it may be possible to manage bad soil, bad grass or poor drainage, it’s hard once you face all three. If your grass has very little heat tolerance and requires regular doses of pricey fungicide. But the biggest drawback can be the clay soil. With this dense earth, grass roots penetrated an inch or two, then spread out, to create the thick layer of dead plant matter called thatch. Even tree roots prefer thatch to the heavy clay. These issues, whereas rather serious, are fairly common, particularly in new neighborhoods.
The best solution here is to take away five to 6 in. of clay soil, replace it with topsoil and replant with a hardy seed or sod. But ours is that a landscaped yard, with terraces, flowerbeds, fences plus underground sprinklers. It allows little area for earthmoving equipment which may harm concrete sidewalk plus drive. Plus finally, this technique is expensive.
