The Mechanics Of Landscape Design

As you’ve started with your own landscaping project, you’ve probably noticed some of the most incredible landscaping ideas, yards, and gardens. You almost can’t help but wonder how some landscape designers come up with this stuff. Researching for the right plants, creating design shapes, choosing materials, and countless other details are usually too much for the first time do it yourselfer.

For some seasoned designers with years of experience it may simply be a matter of repetitive ideas and experience. For other designers and planners, it is vision. Or simply trying different design ideas until something works is often the way it goes. Most home owners and do it yourselfers fall into this last group. With little or no experience and without a clue, the only thing left is to thumb through books and pictures of yards, landscapes, and gardens looking for an idea that will work for their own yard.

With all the magazines and books filled with landscaping pictures and ideas, there should be little difficulty in finding a design or plan that could at least be duplicated. It probably would be If every yard was the same shape.  However, the fact is that most yards aren’t the same size or shape. Regardless of all the landscape designs and ideas available, you probably won’t find a design that is an exact fit to the shape of your own yard or lot.

Since this is where most do it yourself home landscapers find themselves, designing their landscaping simply needs a different approach. Don’t waste a lot of time looking for the perfect plan that will just fit your yard or property. When looking through different landscaping photos and ideas, try to identify the things that are alike in most or all of the landscaping ideas. Look for the design ideas that are repeated over and over by different architects and designers. Because they most always come from simple principles of design and art, these are the things that are generally appealing in design. Elements like these will most probably incorporate well into most designs and landscaping plans regardless of shape.

Look at different shapes and the way they’re repeated, the way plants are set, and the ways different colors are used. Pay close attention to the little details of plant colors and groups, decor, decorative rocks, and other elements being placed together in groups. Try and look beyond just the shape of a landscape design and try to understand the details of what makes a landscape design what it is. You’ll learn about the mechanics of landscape design which you can use and turn into your own ideas.

Other peoples ideas, designs, and even landscaping pictures can be a great design tool to help you generate ideas for your own design. You’ll have better luck piecing different ideas from different plans together instead of trying to find the exact perfect design shape for your landscape. You’ll have a much better chance of creating a unique design as well as saving yourself a lot of frustration.
